** Tips **

Do not draw the new picture freehand and then place the grid on top... it will be wrong.

Use pencil and draw your lines lightly incase you have to erase.

Measure the distance between the lines you draw, make sure they are even.

Don't get in a hurry, but don't try to do this at the last minute either.

Choose an easy cartoon, one with only one subject and no words.  However, whatever cartoon you choose, has be rendered exactly in your new picture.

Do not scan in your picture, enlarge it, print it and try to pass it off as your own work.

1. Choose a small cartoon from the newspaper.

2. Decide which one of the squares you would like to work with and cut it out.

3. Glue the cartoon to the top of a piece of computer paper.

4. Measure the cartoon in centimeters (cm) and on the back of your paper record the measurements under the heading “Original Picture”.  This is how the measurement should look on the back of your paper.

5. Next you will draw a grid over the cartoon.  There will be a line every 5 mm (millimeters).

When you have the grid done it will look something like this

6. Now you will decide how much bigger the new drawing will be.  My picture can only be 3 times bigger and still fit on the page.  Your new picture must be at least 2 times larger than the original.

The Scale Factor will tell me how much bigger your new picture is from your original.

Since my picture is 3 times bigger, my scale factor is 3:1.  If your picture is 5 times bigger, your scale factor will be 5:1.

Label the size of the new picture on the back of your paper, like I have shown above (in #4).  Multiply the original width by the scale factor to get the new width.  Multiply the length by the scale factor to get the new length.  Multiply the grid size by the scale factor to get the new grid size.

7. We are now going to draw the grid. My new grid size will be 15mm X 15mm.  The following example is an example of how your new picture might look.  [ My original grid was 5mm X 5mm, since my new picture is 3 times bigger, the new grid must also be three times bigger.]

(Notice that there will be the same number of squares across the new picture that there are on the original.  )

8. You are now ready to start transferring your picture one square at a time.  You might want to label the squares to make it easier to transfer the picture.  Labeling them would look something like this.

9.  Don’t get overwhelmed.  Just take the picture one square at a time.  It doesn’t have to be perfect, but make sure that each square of the new picture matches the corresponding square of the old picture. It doesn't have to be exact, but it does have to be close.

10. Decorate your picture.  Color it, add glitter, ribbon, anything you can think of to make it more creative.

This is how you will be graded on this project.
