Math in the Real World Project

Projects

This project will help you identify how math is used in the real world.  You will find 5 pictures of things in your “world.”  This five pictures must incorporate some type of mathematical concept.  You can only have one picture for each concept.

The pictures can be hand drawn, cut out of a magazine or paper, or a photograph that you have taken.  Be creative.  Do not draw a picture of a triangle or square and expect to receive credit.

Under each picture must be two pieces of information.  First, you must identify what the picture is and where it came from.  Second, you must relate it to a mathematical concept… in other words, tell what it has to do with math or how math is involved.  There could many different concepts related to the subject matter.  Choose one or two to give a good description.  For example, I have taken a picture of my house.  Under the picture I would write: “This is a picture I took of my house. Houses must be built with precision and accuracy, otherwise the walls and floors will not fit together or the ceiling will leak. The walls, ceilings, and floors of a house are geometric planes that intersect.” In the first sentence I identified what the picture is and where it came from.  The second and third identify three mathematical concepts.

This is not a grammar class, however you will lose one point for each spelling mistake or grammatical error.

This project is due September 15,2010.
