7th Grade Project 1 -- Due: 9/15/2010

This project will require help from a parent or older sibling.  You will need a measuring tape, ruler, colored pencils (markers or crayons are also acceptable), and some imagination.

You are going to plan a small rectangular flower garden to go in your backyard.  You will draw a picture of your backyard on a poster board and show where your flower garden will be positioned.  Use your ruler to help you draw straight lines.  Do not print off of the computer!!  This must be hand drawn.

You will need to label the length and width of your yard and your flower garden.

Here are some step-by-step instructions:

  1. Draw a picture of your back yard on a poster board.  Make sure you use your measuring tape to find the lengths and widths of your yard.  (If you have a really big yard, your parents can help you estimate the distances.)
  2. Label the picture with the lengths and widths of your yard.
  3. Draw your flower garden where you want it to be on your back yard.
  4. On the back of your poster, you will record the length and width of your back yard (round to the nearest foot).  You will then approximate the area of your back yard.
  5. Also on the back of your poster, you will record the length and width of your flower garden, also to the nearest foot.  You will then approximate the area of your flower garden.
  6. Finally, make sure your name, date, and class period are written on the back of your poster.

Here is a very rough example of what your poster could look like.  Remember, be creative, draw in your trees, dog house, pool, whatever you want to put in it.  You don’t have to be an artist, I’m not grading on ability, only effort.  You will also be graded on the correctness of your area calculations.  (If your backyard is not square, you will have to estimate or find the area of smaller parts and then add them together.)
